Глагол сопротивляться передается английскими oppose, resist и withstand. Oppose имеет в виду сопротивление любого рода – от словесного возражения до вооруженных действий: сопротивляться принятию какого-л. плана – to oppose the plan, сопротивляться (оказывать сопротивление) войскам – to oppose the troops. Resist и withstand предполагают чаще всего сопротивление, спровоцированное враждебной стороной, причем withstand в большей мере, чем resist, подчеркивает успешный исход сопротивления.
